The latent issue of overtime has the potential to become explosive and
imminent, enflamed by society’s 24/7 connectivity and stoked by recent
overtime class action suits in Canada’s financial sector, says lawyer
Mort Mitchnick of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP. On February 19th, an
Ontario court allowed a class action suit against the Scotiabank over
overtime to proceed. This, despite a dismissal last year of a similar
class action suit against the CIBC.
Ontario is bringing in the seventh consecutive annual increase to the minimum wage – raising it to $10.25, effective March 31. And, on April 1 Nova Scotians will see the minimum wage increase to $9.20 on April 1. This is a 6.9 per cent increase from the current rate of $8.60.
Ontario court rejects Nortel settlement to former and disabled employees

Justice Morawetz of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice has rejected a proposed settlement in the Nortel insolvency proceedings involving the claims of Nortel's terminated employees, pensioners and employees on long term disability.
Business headlines declare that for many sectors the recession is nearly
over. Maybe so, but that doesn’t mean the purse strings have loosened
up any. In fact, for many organizations it means doing more with less
and scrutinizing every line on the budget sheet. Employee engagement programs, although not a large expense, have been an
easy target to trim as they often lack specific tracking metrics and
are hard to measure in terms of Return on Investment (ROI) and Value on
Investment (VOI).
