Online training eliminates high cost of on-site training

When ergo-health, a Canadian manufacturer of ergonomic products, secured a contract from Office Depot in the US to supply 1,000 stores with a premium ergonomic office chair, it looked for a way to roll out the product to Office Depot sales associates across the U.S that would teach employees about the product and how to demonstrate its benefits to customers.

“It’s difficult to flip the switch on launch day and to roll out a product covering a broad geographical area with enough feet on the ground to do the training.” says Greg Bandler, co-CEO of Toronto-based ergo-health. “Virtual online training was just the solution we were looking for.”

Thanks to a new technology designed by Toronto company Metrick Entertainment, Office Depot employees were able to watch videos on the internet. A series of online videos explained the special features and benefits of the new product and how to demonstrate the ergonomic chair to customers.

Following each video, viewers take an online quiz and the results are automatically sent to head office. This allows the company to track which stores have completed the training and what skills employees need to improve. As an added bonus, employees do the training from their home computers.

“The average cost of the web-based system can be created for between $7,000 and$10,000, depending on the company’s needs,” says Laurence Metrick, president of Metrick Entertainment, “which is much more cost effective that creating training manuals at about $70 each with no guarantee the manuals will be read.”

The launch was so successful in the U.S. that ergo-health is planning to use the same online training system to roll out the new product in Shoppers Drug Mart and Office Depot stores across Canada.
